10 Fun New Movies to Look Forward to in 2021

As the year comes to an end, there are a lot of things to be grateful for: friends, family, and life as a whole. In 2020, all of our lives were turned upside down in an unimaginable way, but here we are, at the end, ready for what 2021 has to bring.

With COVID-19 vaccinations underway, it is clear that 2021 will be different, and we will even be able to begin our return to a “pre-COVID” life. In that pre-COVID life is moviegoing. A fun pastime that feels as if it was a lifetime away. Sitting in crowded theaters amongst friends and strangers, eating overpriced food, and enjoying the film being shown on the big screen. In 2021, we will be able to see some of that again. Here are 10 fun new movies to look forward to seeing in the new year, on the big screen and at home:

1. Malcolm & Marie (February 2021)

Shot on an intimate and secluded set, Malcolm & Marie was the first film to be written, directed, and completed in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. Euphoria director Sam Levinson partners with Zendaya once again, in a story about the relationship of film director Malcolm (John David Washington), and his girlfriend Marie (Zendaya), as they await critics’ responses to Malcolm’s latest film.

2. A Quiet Place Part ll (April 2021)

In the sequel to John Krasinski’s hit 2018 film A Quiet Place, the Abbott family is back and ready to fight for survival. Judging by the trailer, it seems that we will be given a closer look at the beginning of the invasion of the mysterious creatures with razor sharp hearing, as well as a look at the present, where the Abbott family happens upon other survivors.

3. No Time To Die (April 2021)

James Bond is back. Daniel Craig returns for the fifth time as secret agent 007, in the 25th installment of the James Bond film series. In No Time To Die, Bond is tasked with rescuing a kidnapped scientist, as well as stopping Safin (Rami Malek), a mysterious villain armed with dangerous technology. 

4. Black Widow (May 2021)

Scarlett Johansson is back as the Black Widow (a.k.a. Natasha Romanoff), and for the first time, in a solo movie. Here we will be introduced to Natasha’s life back in Russia, and learn more about the complexity of her character and the people that were in her life before The Avengers (2010).

5. Free Guy (May 2021)

Ryan Reynolds stars as Guy, a video game character with the occupation of a bank-teller, who suddenly becomes self-aware of the violent, unreal world he is living in, and attempts to take his life into his own hands. It looks like Reynolds will bring his dry sarcastic humor from Deadpool (2016) into this film, and it will be a great way to enjoy some laughs and escape the outside world.   

6. In the Heights (June 2021)

From Lin-Manuel Miranda, director of the hit Broadway show Hamilton (2015) comes In the Heights, his first Broadway hit in 2008. The popular musical has been turned into a movie, and fans are excitedly waiting for the chance to see it in theaters. In the Heights follows characters from the Dominican-American neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City, highlighting their triumphs and struggles over three days.

7. Jungle Cruise (July 2021)

Loosely based on the popular Disneyland ride of the same name, Jungle Cruise stars Emily Blunt as Lily Houghton, a doctor in search of an ancient healing tree that will change medicine as she knows it. Houghton and her team partner up with a skipper named Frank (Dwayne Johnson), as they travel down a river filled with dangerous animals and traps.

9. Death on the Nile (September 2021)

Kenneth Branagh directs and stars as Detective Hercule Poirot in this film adaptation of one of Agatha Christie’s most popular novels. Poirot must investigate and solve the murder of an heiress aboard a cruise ship sailing on the Nile River, and everyone is a suspect.

10. Dune (October 2021)

This star-studded remake of the 1984 film based on Frank Herbert’s novel has been much anticipated. Timothée Chalamet is Paul Atriedes, heir to an empire set in a dystopian desert land. With the help of his allies, Paul must go to battle in order to gain control of their planet, Arrakis.
