6 crazy facts you should know about astrology

Astrology is defined as “the divination of the supposed influences of the stars and planets on human affairs and terrestrial events by their positions and aspects.” There’s an old saying that things are “written in the stars,” and for believers of astrology, this is especially true. Here’s some interesting facts about astrology you may not know.

  1. It began over 5 thousand years ago

The earliest evidence for astrology dates from the 3rd millennium BC, where it was used in systems to predict seasonal shifts and to interpret celestial cycles as signs of divine communications. Until the 17th century, astrology was considered a scholarly tradition, and it helped drive the development of astronomy. It was commonly accepted in political and cultural circles, and some of its concepts were used in other traditional studies, such as alchemy, meteorology, and medicine. By the end of the 17th century, emerging scientific concepts in astronomy, such as heliocentrism, undermined the theoretical basis of astrology, which subsequently lost its academic standing and became regarded as a pseudoscience.

  1. Astrologers have predicted many historical events

The United Astrology Conference meets every four years, and in 2008, a panel of professional astrologers unanimously predicted Obama’s victory. Next, in 2012, they predicted Obama would win again, and they were just as right. In history, famous astrologer Nostradamus is said to have predicted the rise of Adolf Hitler in 1933 and the Great Fire of London in 1666. Nostradamus penned his supposed predictions of the future in his magnum opus, the 1555 book, Les Propheties.

  1. Your zodiac sign may influence what you look like

Astrologers believe that your zodiac sign will actually impact what you look like. It might sound far-fetched, but astrologers believe they have uncovered certain physical traits that are most prominent in certain signs. For example, Geminis are said to be small-boned and to have refined features. Scorpios are said to be muscular and to have an intense look in their eyes. Sagittarius are thought to generally have long, muscular legs, and female Sagittarius’s are said to behave in a tomboy-like manner.

  1. There are actually multiple elements to your star sign

In your birth chart, the three main planetary points that outline your everyday personality are your sun, moon, and rising. Most everyone knows their sun sign, but many are not as familiar with their moon and rising sign. This is why the question “What’s your sign?” is so much more complex than the simple answer of “I’m a Leo.”

The sun is your identity. It is the essence that you shine out into the world. It represents the vital force that drives you to seek the highest expression of your true self. The moon is the soul behind your identity. It is the subconscious side of yourself that you typically keep hidden and is the driving force behind your emotional reactions. Rising sign (also known as your Ascendant) is your social personality. It is how you dawn on people as it relates to the zodiac sign that was on the Eastern horizon when you were born. Your rising sign represents your physical body and outward style.

  1. Your star sign might not be what you think

You may have led your whole life thinking you were one sign, only to find out you’re actually another!  Things change in the sky just as they change on Earth. There’s a phenomenon called precession, which refers to the Earth wobbling on its axis. Because star signs depend on the position of the sun at the time of your birth, and, if the position of the Earth is different than we thought, so too will be your sun sign. Whether you should actually “switch” zodiac signs according to this information is the subject of much debate.

  1. There’s a 13th star sign you may not know about

The new sign is called Ophiuchus, which nestles between Scorpio and Sagittarius, so every other sign’s dates have moved to make way for it. Ophiuchus shares many of the same characteristics as Sagittarius, and people with its sign are described as “healers and light-bearers.” As mentioned earlier, the constellations move over time, and Ophiuchus has now been recognised officially by NASA. However, many still don’t take it into account.
