Germany to deport two terrorist suspects born in the country

Germany has announced it will deport two terror suspects who were born in Germany but whose parents are foreign. This is the first time in German history that people who were born in the country have been deported.

Lower Saxony Interior minister Boris Pistorius said the two men, a 27-year-old Algerian and a 22-year-old Nigerian were arrested and suspected of planning a terror attack last month when police found a gun and a flag showing their affiliation to the so-called Islamic state in their homes during a police raid in the German city of Göttingen.

They were never charged because police could not establish if they had planned to carry out the attacks.

Police classified the men as “dangerous”.

After the attack on a German Christmas market in Berlin last December which left 12 people dead, the country has been forced to increase efforts and resort to more drastic measures to fight against terrorism.

The two terror suspects are likely to be deported before mid-April and are subject to a life-long ban which prohibits them from entering Germany for an indefinite time.
