IFTAs 2020: winners and nominees full list

Are you a movie or TV series lover? Last night, the 16th Irish Film & Television Academy Awards (IFTA) took place online as a ‘virtual ceremony’ on the Virgin Media One site. Keep reading to check out the IFTAs 2020 full list of winners and nominees!

The nominations for the IFTAs were announced by the Irish Film and Television Academy last summer, on 14 July 2020. Because no ceremony was held in 2019, this ceremony honoured films and television drama released in both 2018 and 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no physical ceremony took place; instead, there was a “virtual ceremony” at 10 p.m. hosted by Deirdre O’Kane.

It was definitely different than before. Despite the lack of the red-carpet, people presenting the awards included President Michael D. Higgins, Martin Scorsese, Daisy Ridley and Liam Neeson. What’s more the legendary movie maker cheered the Irish audience with realistic but kind words: “Little did we know what strange times lay ahead that we are witnessing now, and it appears to me that we are all having to reinvent cinema now, and that’s a good thing, it is. Because now, more than ever, we need the moving image. We need vision, creativity and storytelling that takes us on a journey and opens us, enlightens us, opens our hearts and our minds, and there’s something about Ireland and Irish storytelling that is universal that connects with everyone in the world. John Ford knew that, and I know that”

Good news for Kerry native Jessie Buckey too, who won two awards on the night – Best Actress in a Film, for her work in Wild Rose, and Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for Chernobyl. The successful and loved actress admitted her shock, saying: “Thank you so much, this is completely unexpected. I literally have just come in the front door, jumped in the shower and threw a dress on myself…this is all so overwhelming. Thank you, this is an honour”.
