21 killed in Kenya hotel attack

On Tuesday at around 12:00 GMT gunmen stormed the DusitD2 hotel and business complex in Nairobi opening fire on the hotel guests. Upon entering one of the men blew himself up in the hotel lobby. The assault resulted in a 19-hour standoff between police forces and terrorists with several hotel guests and employees barricading themselves in toilets and hiding in offices and under tables.

During the attack the police evacuated around 700 people, 28 were brought to the hospital with injuries. At least 21 people were killed amongst them 16 Kenyans, one Briton, one American and three unidentified people of African origin.

The five armed attackers were killed during the siege, officials say. The police are now on the hunt for people in connection to the terror attack. President Uhuru Kenyatta said “every person that was involved in the funding, planning, and execution of this heinous act” would be “relentlessly” pursued.” The Somalian Islamist group al-Shabaab, who has been responsible for terrorist attacks in Kenya over the past years, has claimed the attack to itself.
