Did you know COVID-19 is likely to cost the economy $1 trillion during 2020?

Did you know globally, the airline industry is set to lose $113bn?

Did you know the oil price has slipped to 30$ per barrel?

Did you know the UEFA EURO 2020 has been postponed to 2021?

Did you know there is no evidence that face masks can prevent you from getting the virus?

Did you know that the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has not received any reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with COVID-19?

Did you know that the entire human population is potentially susceptible to COVID-19 infection as it is a new virus, and nobody has prior immunity to it?

Did you know that within weeks, the virus has infected more people than Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) did in months?

Did you know MERS took 2.5 years and SARS took 130 days as opposed to 48 days taken by COVID-19 to infect the first 1000 people?

But most important of all,

Did you know China could have stopped 95 percent of its corona virus infections if social distancing and quarantine started just three weeks earlier?

People are bombarded with so much information lately that they are forgetting a key aspect:

The approach taken in dealing with the issue.

In fact, Trump mentioned in a recent interview that he predicted the COVID-19 to be a pandemic before it was even declared as a pandemic.

Now,  we do not know to what extent that might be true but what we know for certain is that humans have had a long history of taking actions only after the damage is done.

It’s almost as if we do not learn from our past mistakes. Let it be the Australian wildfires of 2019, the repeat of Kerala floods in 2019 or the terrorist attacks worldwide.

Irrespective of the nature of the calamity, there has been a lack of initiative taken in preventing the outbreaks from happening.

Global warming for that matter has been a hot topic for years now and yet the approach taken towards it is slow and steady.

Now, it’s not that we do not have the resources or knowledge to prevent a calamity from happening.

Bill Gates gave a famous talk in 2015 and even stated that we aren’t ready for the next pandemic.  His TED Talk from 2015 titled “The next outbreak? We’re not ready” is being shared widely online in recent weeks given the impact of COVID-19 around the world.

“If anything kills over 10 million people in the next few decades, it’s likely to be a highly infectious virus rather than a war,”   Gates said during the Ted Talk.

What is stopping us from taking precautionary measures?

Money,

Resources,

Time,

Proper planning or……..

Us?

One lesson we need to learn and act upon now is that:

Preventing a battle is better than fighting a battle.

It’s difficult being a migrant in times like this when there is information overload.
