Fallon & Byrne: your one stop shop

Anyone looking for a grocers, nice date spot or just somewhere to grab a glass of wine and a cheeseboard with a friend, you’re in for a treat. Fallon & Byrne have just what you need. Located on Exchequer St (just off George’s St), if you pop in during the day you’ll be greeted by the hustle and bustle of hungry workers/shoppers/Dubliners making their way through the maze of fine foods on offer.

Food Hall

First stop is the fruit and veg in every colour, for every palate. Next is the decadent coffee stop with a display of pastries to nibble on to get you through the day. Beside this you’ll find the deli, with an array of dishes to eat in or take home for lunch/dinner (including quiches, salads and sandwiches/wraps).

Move on to the next counter and you’ll find CHEESE HEAVEN. All kinds of cheese from hard to soft and in between, from sheep, goats or cows originating from several different countries. You’ll find the most helpful staff are on hand to help you make your choice, offer you a taste or recommend cheese to go together with other ingredients for the perfect dish. Further along you’ll find a meat counter and fresh fish beside it. Once you’ve examined all these counters have to offer, it’s time to turn to the shelves with ingredients, products and food from different nations that all have the same thing in common – they taste great. From familiar brands to new discoveries, if you’ve ever come across an ingredient in a recipe and thought “I have no idea where I’ll find this” Fallon & Byrne will probably have it. You can also grab freshly made “ready meals” to cook at home and juices to go on your way to the till.

The Restaurant

But if you’re not in the mood for cooking your own food, the restaurant upstairs can help you. Pop in for lunch during the day in the bright and airy dining room. For dinner there is a choice between À la carte and pre-theater menu. With their pre-theater menu including two courses starting at 25 euro, you can prepare to have your tastebuds surprised for a reasonable price. They change their menu with the seasons to reflect the produce available. Think fresh watermelon salad for summer, and then peaches and goat cheese salad with pumpkin seeds in Autumn. Their menus never disappoint. And if you opt not to have a dessert, try one of their dessert cocktails instead (hint: strawberry cheesecake). Bring a friend or a date and make use of the two for one cocktail promotion in the restaurant Sunday – Tuesday (excluding December). To view all they have to offer, see their menus (including a vegan menu). The pre-theater menu can be availed of all day Sunday – Tuesday, and 5:30-7pm Wednesday – Saturday.

The Wine Cellar

If you meander down the stairs on your left as you enter F&B, you’ll find yourself in the Wine Cellar. Sit yourself down in a nice, chill atmosphere and choose a wine from their list or avail of one of their wine tasting evenings with a group of friends. Pick a few bites from the menu to complement the tasting, or dive right into a main course.

If you happen to be in Dun Laoghaire for a walk along the pier, stop by the People’s Park where you’ll find the most gorgeous Victorian shelter now used by Fallon & Byrne. Here you can grab a sharing platter with a friend or lunch to munch on from the cafe deli and then stroll around the park. Open 12-9pm Monday – Saturday, and 12-8pm on Sunday.
