Festival remembers Ireland\’s fight for independence
The Dublin Festival of History starts this Friday with discussions, historical walks of the city, writing workshops and films.
What can we learn by visiting a cemetery? According to the organizers of Dublin History Festival, a walking tour of Grangegorman Military Cemetery can teach us about one of the most important chapters of Ireland’s history: the 1916 Rising. This rebellion was mounted by Irish Republicans to end British Rule in Ireland and establish an independent Irish Republic while the United Kingdom was heavily engaged in World War I.
The Dublin Festival of History, now in its third year, is aimed at anyone with an interest in history and who enjoys reading history for pleasure. The overall theme of the festival is general history, from all eras and aspects. In this year, as the centenary of the 1916 Rising approaches, the festival will open with a panel of Irish historians reflecting on commemorative events to date.
The event takes place from 25th September to 10th October in Dublin Castle and city libraries. In 2015, for the first time, the Festival features a Children’s programme to catch the attention of younger audiences.
