Music is a form of expression; without musicians, the world would be a dull place with fewer voices and words of expression. Musicians using their platform to promote activism is a loud act, with many eyes on them; they have a following that listens to what they have to say. These five musicians have done tremendous work, from charitable deeds to open activism.

 

Maggie Rogers

Maggie Rogers has taken indie music under her wing with her electric, dancing-provoking sound. The expression in her music is loud and vulnerable. Her fearless mindset makes her inspiration, and she is not afraid to speak her mind on what she thinks is right. She is a passionate activist alongside her music and has projected out about injustice and political matters. Following Biden’s presidential election, Maggie Rogers and Phoebe Bridgers made a collaboration of the song, “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls. The proceeds were donated to Fair Fight Action. And this would not be the first time Maggie has donated proceeds from her music. The singer’s show and merchandise profits have been donated to Planned Parenthood, supporting establishments that she believes are important for human rights. She does not fear speaking up for what she believes in. She has been vocal via social media about the sexism she has faced during her live shows.

Dolly Parton

A woman whose music feeds our soul, warms our hearts, and puts a smile on our face. Dolly Parton’s kind-hearted persona has touched the soul of many, and not just from her music. Since 1998, Dolly Parton’s organisation, Dollywood Foundation, has been up and running. Their primary focus is access to education for children and teenagers. Also, Dolly had set up the institution, Imagination Library, to give children free access to literature. Imagination Library has given children inspiration and motivation to read alongside Dolly, giving them the opportunity to better education since 1995. Dolly’s foundation also helps to give high-school students scholarships for third-level education, allowing these students to fulfil their dreams and become the people they want to be.

Dolly had also generously donated a significant amount of almost 1 million dollars to the research of Moderna Covid Vaccine. Just like that, Dolly shares her compassion for the people in this world, offering as much as she possibly can. 

 

Perrie Edwards

A singer in the girl band, Little Mix, Perrie is not shy from promoting female empowerment. Her positive, inspirational personality influences many young people all around the world. Perrie has been a patron for the charity Coppa Feel since 2019, which raises awareness for breast cancer. With a large number of her following being female, her promotion for Coppa Feel highlights the importance of breast cancer attention and catching the early signs of the disease. With 11.4 million followers on Instagram, Perrie’s conscious awareness supporting Coppa Feel gives women access to information and knowledge on being mindful of themselves.

Perrie has been open about mental health and her own anxiety; she openly spoke about this in an interview with Glamour Magazine in 2019. Perrie expressed her journey with the public and reminded people that they are not alone, and help is always there.

 

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift has certainly had our attention since the beginning of her career till this day, as her catchy songs and sincere lyrics have stuck with us for over a decade. During the pandemic, Taylor had written, produced and released not one, but two phenomenal home-recorded albums. Taylor is undoubtedly a powerful woman who is passionate about kindness and people. Like Maggie Rogers, Taylor had been quite active on her social media accounts about the U.S. presidential election. Taylor demonstrated her political opinions and the significance of an individual’s vote. Her voice has been a tremendous influence that reminded the world of their right to vote.

Taylor has positively empowered many women in this world as she is openly and proudly a feminist. Before, she used to be relatively silent on these issues, alongside her political voice.  However, seen in the Netflix documentary, Miss Americana, Taylor decided to no longer be silent on her opinions and became vocal via her social media platforms. The singer had been vocal about Tennessee’s political situation, supporting two Democratic candidates and ever since, she has continuously been passionately vocal on LGBT rights and racial and gender equality. Her refusal to support senate Marsha Blackburn opened her outspoken opinion on her desires for an equal world where everyone feels safe. In 2018, before this election, Taylor spoke on her media: “ I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent. I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love.”

 

Phoebe Bridgers

Solo singer-songwriter, Phoebe Bridgers, has stolen indie music lovers’ hearts with her gentle, breathtaking voice and heartfelt lyrics. Above, I mentioned her work with Maggie Rogers to support Fair Fight Action after the US presidential election, Phoebe has been consistently vocal about her political views and human rights. Part of her 2020 album Punisher’s earnings had been donated towards charities that strive towards racial equality, during the BLM protests, Bridgers had been vocal on her opinion of defunding the police. She spoke up to her following on this issue and encouraged them to get involved as much as they can to help. In June 2020, during the protests, Phoebe stated that all the profits from her merchandise store would be going towards the Bail Project.

These five women illustrate the significance of using your voice. Refusing to be silenced on their thoughts. These women make a difference, informing, educating and inspiring the masses. If each individual took after them, it would surely make a difference in the world. The vocalisation of their actions have reached a numerous amount as they don’t only use their platforms to promote their art, but also ways to take action and make this world a stronger and safer place for everyone.
