Malahide and the 5 Best Things to do there

Malahide is one amongst a number of coastal areas in Ireland with breathtaking qualities to it, with a history dating as far back as 6000 BC. This is inclusive of its seaside, its town area, and the restaurants and bars it has on offer, among other things. The aim of this list is to outline the top 5 best things to do in Malahide out of all of its qualities, as follows below. 

1. Malahide Beach

It goes without saying that Malahide Beach is a quintessential part of the town for both its residents and visitors alike. Stretching out at 2 km long, this beach consists of an estuary and a marina, which is highly popular within the summer months. Some of the common sights around this area include the Irish Sea itself, its sandy shores, and the various boats and yachts often out at sea by the beach.

2. Malahide Castle and Gardens

Another major draw of this area is its castle and gardens known as the Malahide Castle and Gardens. Established in 1185 as a wooden fortress and later becoming the castle we know today, this vast castle offers attendees tours of the interior ripe with royal furnishing and history of the castle itself and even concerts. The “Gardens” part of this destination includes a vast green area surrounding it, consisting of a botanical garden, a playground, and a GAA pitch to visit.

3. The Casino Model Railway Museum

Also contributing to the historical offerings of Malahide is The Casino Model Railway Museum. Remaining a mainstay there for 200 years, this museum’s collection was crafted by Cyril Ray, with all the trains on display created by him. The main aim of this museum is to preserve his works so they can be appreciated for the future generations to come.

4. Yellow Walls Cemetery

Although it’s a morbid pick on this list, the Yellow Walls Cemetery is another place to bring in the sights of the history of Malahide. It stands as “a burial place for persons of unknown identity, unbaptised children and paupers”, with a history dating as far back as the late 19th/early 20th century on record. One standout sight in this cemetery is the cross commemorating The Gainsborough Wreck, an event in where “vessel called the Gainsborough was wrecked off the coast of Portmarnock during a heavy storm” on November 29th, 1838.

5. The Sea Shack Malahide

For dining within the Malahide area, one of the finest establishments for dining on seafood is The Fish Shack Malahide. The Fish Shack’s Malahide location is renowned for its fish and chips, as well as its other seafood offerings like “the mussels & crab tostadas”. Its appearance and interior consists of wooden furniture, potted plants scattered around, and an outdoor patio area for the sunny days.
