What is the SMI?
SMI stands for Salario Mínimo Interprofesional, Spain’s statutory minimum wage. The government approved the 2026 rate on 17 February and the measure was published in the official state bulletin the following day.

Workers whose salary is arranged over 12 monthly payments normally have the two extra payments prorated across the year, so the monthly figure shown on a payslip can look different.
Who is covered?
The government says the increase applies to permanent workers, qualifying temporary workers and household employees. Sector collective agreements can set wages above the statutory minimum.
What should newcomers check?
When comparing a job offer, look at the annual gross salary, the number of payments, your working hours and any applicable collective agreement. Do not compare only one monthly figure without checking whether extra payments are included.
If you started work earlier in 2026 on a lower SMI-based salary, the increase is retroactive from 1 January, so check that any required adjustment has been reflected in your pay.
