5 Amazing Upcoming Fashion Trends for 2021

Despite the lack of actual social events to wear fun outfits to, 2020 fashion definitely still made its mark. From sweater vests to tie dye, we saw trends emerge throughout the year that no one was expecting.

Let’s see which trends will return for 2021, and what new ones we might be seeing.

Puff sleeves

Over the last few years, puff sleeves have made an appearance during spring, and 2021 is set to be no different. Puff sleeve tops, dresses and blouses are a spring-summer staple now, and anyone can pull off this statement look. If it’s a look that at first intimidates you, maybe try find a puff sleeve piece in a plain colour. A little black dress (or LBD, as it’s fondly known) comes in handy all the time, and puff sleeves can really vamp up an otherwise plain piece.

If you’re a little more adventurous, a fun print puff sleeve top is always a fun choice in spring and summer. Pair it with some light wash jeans and trainers for a casual look, or a dressier skirt and heels for a night out.

Colour blocking

Another one that has stuck around for a few years, colour blocking will be staying for 2021. Colour blocking involves using “blocks of colour” in your outfit to create a bold, eye-catching look. As well as being bang on trend, colour blocking can also be used as a useful tool to flatter your body, no matter what your shape – you can use darker blocks of colour to disguise areas you aren’t so keen on showing off. Colour blocking can be done pretty much anyway you want – a monochrome outfit with different shades of the same colour; an outfit full of complementary colours; or even an out-there combination of contrasting colours. Use the classic colour wheel for inspiration.

Stripes

Bold prints always make their way into yearly top trends, and this year it’s going to be stripes. Though horizontal stripes are a classic that stick around forever in high street and high end fashion, this year vertical stripes are set to be on trend. While these can be harder to style, they always look classy and high fashion and make for a great way to give your wardrobe an extra bit of chicness.

Stripes are also a great way to play with colour. A good way to start is to try out a plain striped trouser or skirt, and pair with a casual top and trainers or boots. A more daring option is also a full striped dress!

Open back

One of the more daring trends, open backs are set to be huge in 2021. Open back tops and dresses have been making their mark among fashion enthusiasts for a while, but the spring-summer 2021 runways showed they were here to stay. The versatile trend promises to fit perfectly into both your casual and party wardrobe.

While cute, open-back, floral sundresses make the ideal summer attire, floaty, backless slip dresses are perfect for a night out. A backless top dressed down with some jeans is also a good way to approach this trend without being too daring.

Elevated loungewear

2020 was the year of working from home, and we got used to being able to chill around the house in comfy clothes. Elevated loungewear is still functional and work from home friendly, however is more refined and fashionable. Think cosy joggers and sweatpants but teamed with a more tailored top or coat, and some boots instead of the trainers you might typically pair with tracksuit type bottoms. Or it could be a cosy hoodie or jumper, put with some structured trousers or a skirt. The whole idea is to be comfy and chic!
