Mattel have released three new kinds of Barbie to be closer to the modern women of the world.
If I’m thinking about Barbie I immediately imagine a tall, blond, fashionable woman who drives a pink car with her boyfriend, blond too. But nowadays everything is different! Political correctness has entered in the pink Barbie world.
Mattel, an american multinational toy company produced three different kind of Barbie: Tall Barbie, Curvy Barbie and Small Barbie. They should represent the diversity between women’s bodies in England and USA. These three body types will also available in an assortment of different skin tones to show the diversity ethynes existent.
“Multiple skin tones did phenomenally for Mattel and it showed that people wanted much more than the blond, blue-eyed Barbie,” Mr Silver said, editor of TTPM, a toy review website.
The Barbie with the “real body” has been accepted in a positive way. Despite this Mattel has been criticised by some feminists who think that this attention about the barbie body encourages the old stereotype that defines women just in relation to their body.
Lenore Wright, from Texas University Baylor, conducted a study in 2003 about the link between Barbie and children. She found that Barbie’s shape didn’t matter to the little girls. They are more interested in Barbie’s activities. The function is more important than the body appearance. Children sometimes can be really wise.
Anyway the new dolls are already available to preorder online, and they are arriving on the shelves of the American stores in March.
