Top 8 Reasons to Study In Ireland

Ireland has become a popular destination for students from all over the world. From world-class institutions, to thriving tech and finance industries, to  an enriching culture, Ireland is an ideal destination in which to live, work, and study.

Whether it’s for a short study abroad experience, or a transition to living here long-term, here are the top 8 reasons why you should study in Ireland!

1. There is a choice of high quality institutions

Ireland is home to several top universities and institutes of technology. Several of these institutions such as University College Dublin (UCD), Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), and Trinity College, one of the most famous universities in Europe, are all located in Dublin. If you want to break out of the capital city, there is also University College Cork (UCC), National University of Ireland Galway, and Maynooth University (part of NUI), among many others. All of these institutions each offer a variety of courses and programmes, so students are very likely to find something that fits their interests and passions.

2. You can learn and work in English

Higher education courses in Ireland are offered in English, even though  the official language of the country is Irish Gaelic. Ireland is also quickly becoming the only primarily English-speaking country in the EU. It is also a great place to learn the English language, so if you are not confident in your English speaking and comprehension abilities, there are a variety of organisations and institutions that offer classes and tutoring.

3. Tuition is affordable

For students outside of EU/EEA and Switzerland, higher education is an expensive endeavour, and Ireland is no exception. However, most institutions have several means of cutting down costs. There are numerous scholarship opportunities available to students based on merit and need. Some universities, such as UCD, offer tuition discounts and easily-navigable loans processes in order to ensure that everyone can access a high quality education. Luckily, for students from EU/EEA and Switzerland, undergraduate study in Ireland is free!

4. You can work while you study

In addition to scholarships and tuition subsidies, international students have the ability to work while they study. During the semester, students can work a part time job up to 20 hours a week. During the holidays, students are allowed to increase their work time to 40 hours a week. This is a great opportunity to earn extra cash to help with any leftover tuition fees and also having some extra pocket money to explore the country. However, know that this only applies to full-time students and not students who are coming for a short-term study abroad programme.

5.You can stay after you graduate

The Irish higher education system wants students to learn, earn, and stay. After graduating from course programmes, international students have the opportunity to stay in Ireland. Non-EA/EEU international students are able to take advantage of the Third Level Graduate Scheme and stay in Ireland for at least a year after graduation, depending on the degree level they obtain. Students that have graduated from Level 8 courses (Bachelor’s Degree and Higher Diplomas) may be granted a Stamp 1G that is valid for up to 12 months. Students that have graduated from Level 9 or 10 courses (Masters and PhDs) qualify for a Stamp 1G for up to 24 months. International students from EEU/EA countries are eligible to stay and work in Ireland after study, without having to go through the scheme.

6. Ireland is a hub for the technology and finance industries

Over the past few years, the technology and finance industries have grown in Ireland, with many companies, such as Google and Facebook, locating their EU Headquarters in and around Dublin. This is a huge draw for students since Ireland is currently an employee’s market, meaning that employees have their pick of jobs after graduation. These companies are also always in need of employees that are able to speak more than English, which is a huge bonus for international multilingual students.

7. Ireland is a safe place to live, study, and work

Ireland is considered one of the safest countries in the world to travel and live. The risk of crime is low, although it is always recommended to exercise regular safety precautions. Ireland is home to friendly people, and safety and security resources are available all over the country. While students are in Ireland to study, they can experience everything the country has to offer without having to worry about their safety and well being.

8. You will study surrounded by a vibrant culture

Ireland is famous for its lush green scenery, its people, and its culture of socialising, music, and fun. There is plenty to do outside of work and study. Ireland is home to beautiful landscapes such as the Cliffs of Moher, Connemara, West Cork, and the Burren, among many others, that make for the perfect weekend adventure. For students that would rather the hustle and bustle of the city, Galway is a fantastic destination for good food and festivals. In Dublin, there are always concerts, theatre, lively markets, and shows that fit every taste and style. Irish people are known for their hospitality, music, and drinking. This is sure to provide an enriching cultural experience, and learning that extends well beyond study in a classroom.

Ireland is a wonderful and unique country in which to study, work, and live. No matter which institution you choose, you will find a programme that’s right for you and an experience that will stay with you for a lifetime.
