MOVING TO IRELAND: 6 Things to Pack (and Not to Pack)

Moving to a new country can be exciting, but it can also be stressful, especially when it comes to packing. If you’re planning moving to Ireland, it’s important to carefully consider what to bring considering the strict check-in luggage limit fixed by airlines. While packing, you’ll need to keep in mind the climate, the local regulations, and your personal needs.

While you might find multiple resources on what to pack, this blog post shall provide you with a comprehensive guide not just on what to pack, but also on what not to pack. Whether you’re moving to Ireland for work, school, or just for a change, this guide will help you streamline the packing process and make your move to Ireland as smooth as possible.

Let’s address the devil first.

What NOT to Pack:

  1. Utensils

If you grew up in Asia as I did, you’re used to a flame burner. While here, all houses are equipped with either electric cooktops or induction cooktops. The utensils which we use back at home don’t have a flat bottom or an induction base. Rather than carrying heavy utensils which might not even work here, we recommend you keep your luggage light while moving to Ireland and buy all cooking utensils from here itself!

  1. Thin T-shirts

Ireland is known for its unpredictable weather, and even during the summer months, it can still be cool and rainy. While you can pack 2-3 t-shirts for the gym or for your loungewear to be worn inside your heated apartment, packing a ton of them may not be practical, as they will not provide enough warmth or protection against the elements. Instead, opt for clothing that can be layered, such as sweaters or jackets.

  1. Open-toed Outdoor Footwear

While open-toed outdoor footwear might be comfortable, it’s not very practical for the Irish weather with a rainy and chilly climate. Consider buying closed-toed shoes or boots while moving to Ireland as they are more suitable for the weather conditions and will keep your feet dry and warm.

4. Umbrella

Although an umbrella may seem like a practical item to pack, take this from someone whose umbrella was broken by the infamous Irish wind- it is extremely difficult to use it in Ireland’s windy and rainy weather. Instead, consider packing a waterproof jacket with a hood or a poncho that can easily be folded and carried in your bag.

5. Ankle-length socks

Ankle-length socks are generally thinner and may not provide enough warmth and protection, especially during the colder months. Additionally, thermal bottoms can shrink and you will need longer and warmer socks to tuck and layer your pants properly. It’s better to pack longer socks or stockings while moving to Ireland so that your feet and legs are warm and protected against the weather. So instead of itsy-bitsy socks, check these longer Irish sock options: Irish Socksciety and SOCK CO-OP

  1. Swimsuit

While Ireland has some beautiful beaches, the weather is often too cold for swimming, even during the summer months. Unless you plan on using an indoor pool, you may not have much use for a swimsuit in Ireland. What to Pack:

1) Adapter

One of the most important items to pack when travelling to Ireland is an adapter that can convert the voltage of your electronics to the European standard of 220 volts. This will allow you to charge your devices, use your laptop or other electronic appliances, and generally stay connected during your trip. And if you have any doubts about which one to buy, you can pack a temporary one from home, and buy a good-quality one after you land here.

2) Layers

As mentioned earlier, Ireland’s weather can be unpredictable, with frequent rain and temperature fluctuations. Packing layers, such as sweaters, cardigans, or jackets, is essential to stay comfortable and adjust to changing weather conditions. Layering your clothing will allow you to easily add or remove items as needed to stay warm or cool.

3) Comfortable water-resistant shoes

Ireland is known for its stunning natural landscapes, which often involve walking or hiking on rugged terrain. It’s important to pack comfortable and sturdy shoes that are water-resistant and can handle the often damp conditions. Opt for shoes with good traction to prevent slipping on wet surfaces. And if you have doubts regarding which brand to buy, we suggest you fly here in your regular sports shoes and invest in good quality boots after coming here.

4) Water-proof Jacket

In Ireland, rain is a common occurrence and it’s important to be prepared. A good quality waterproof jacket is a must-have item to protect yourself from the rain while exploring the country. Look for a jacket that is lightweight, breathable, and windproof, to keep you comfortable during your travels.

5) Scarf

While a scarf may seem like a negligible item, it can be incredibly useful in Irish weather. It can help keep you warm, even when it’s windy outside. It’s also a versatile accessory that can be used to add a layer and style your outfit or to cover your neck, head, or face if needed.

6) Hairdryer

While many hotels and accommodations may provide a hairdryer, it’s always a good idea to pack your own to avoid any inconvenience. A compact and lightweight hairdryer will save space in your luggage and allow you to maintain your daily routine without any interruptions.

In conclusion, packing for a move to Ireland requires careful consideration and planning. Whether you’re relocating permanently or just visiting for a while, being well-prepared will ensure that your experience is enjoyable and stress-free. By following these packing tips, you’ll be ready to take on Ireland’s beautiful landscapes, friendly people, and rich culture. With these tips in mind, you’ll be well-equipped to make the most of your new adventure in Ireland. So, pack smart, travel light, and enjoy all that Ireland has to offer!
