Students Die in Ghana Waterfall Accident
Twenty students have died after being hit by falling trees while swimming at the Kintampo waterfalls, a popular tourist spot in Ghana. The Kintampo waterfalls are one of the highest waterfalls in the country.
According to Ghana national fire service spokesman Prince Billy Anaglate, the freak accident happened on Sunday afternoon during a storm which caused trees to fall and crash onto the students who were swimming in the water. Twenty students, most of them from, Wenchi senior high school, died at the scene while two of them were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead later on. A dozen others, some tourists, were injured and trapped under the trees. Emergency forces were then trying to free them by cutting the trees with chainsaws.
The Kintampo waterfalls are surrounded by woodland. During the storm, many trees had been unrooted and the wind had caused them to fall.
The country’s tourism minister, Catherine Abelema Afeku and President Nana Akufo-Addo have given out their condolences to the families of the victims.
