Irish Man Confirmed Dead in Greek Wildfire

The worst wildfire in Greek history broke out on Monday. It has caused over 81 deaths and at least 187 people seriously injured. The Greek news report said that a newly married Irishman was confirmed dead.

An Irish couple married for a week had gone to Mati of Greece for honeymoon, unfortunately being caught up in the wildfire. They were lost when they were running away from the fire. The wife, Zoe Holohan was sent to hospital because of her burns. But the husband, Brian O’Callaghan-Westropp was confirmed dead.

The couple just got married last Thursday. They were on honeymoon in Mati. When the fire broke out, they were separated trying to escape the flames in the seaside resort of Mati. Unfortunately, only Zoe arrived to the sea and was sent to hospital due to her burns. Brian’s family think that he was helping someone in the fire, as he was a helpful person who loved doing charity work.

However the Irish Ambassador to Greece, Orla O’Hanrahan confirmed that the body of Brian O’Callaghan-Westropp was found. In a statement established by Brian’s family, the two families of the couple said that they were deeply saddened by his death. They also asked for privacy “as we grieve and as Zoe makes her recovery”.

Brian O’Callaghan-Westropp, who was originally from County Clare, worked for a catering company and loved doing volunteering work. He had volunteered for Blood Bikes East, which provides emergency medical transport service around hospitals in Dublin. One of the members of Blood Bikes East, Fanco De Bonis, described Brian as a diligent colleague and praised his selfless on helping others.
