10 Special Quotes From Movies That Pull Our Heartstrings For The Good

Movies can mean a lot of things to us. It can be seen as something to watch for fun and pass time. Some of us might learn from movies and open our minds to various possibilities. It can even teach us empathy and drive social change. Yet, I think the common point of all movies and what it does to people is – it makes us feel things. From the most simple emotion to the deepest ones. From a basic laugh to making us rethink our life choices.

Movies become our safe spaces where we find ourselves lost in the world of the actors. As they tackle similar challenges to our own, their behaviours become a window that we cannot help to take a peek. C.S Lewis, the famous Ireland born author who wrote The Chronicles of Narnia, summarizes what art means so elegantly.

We “seek an enlargement of our being. We want to be more than ourselves. Each of us by nature sees the whole world from one point of view with a perspective and a selectiveness peculiar to himself. … We want to see with other eyes, to imagine with other imaginations, to feel with other hearts, as well as with our own. … We demand windows.”

To feel with other hearts…If we could do this also outside of our time watching movies, I think we would be limitless. I present to you, ten quotes that pulled my heartstrings. May our hearts beat together one day.

Cooper : You’re a scientist, Brand.

Brand : So listen to me when I say that love isn’t something that we invented. It’s… observable, powerful. It has to mean something.

Cooper : Love has meaning, yes. Social utility, social bonding, child rearing…

Brand : We love people who have died. Where’s the social utility in that?

Cooper : None.

Brand : Maybe it means something more – something we can’t yet understand. Maybe it’s some evidence, some artefact of a higher dimension that we can’t consciously perceive. I’m drawn across the universe to someone I haven’t seen in a decade, who I know is probably dead. Love is the one thing we’re capable of perceiving that transcends dimensions of time and space. Maybe we should trust that, even if we can’t understand it. All right Cooper. Yes. The tiniest possibility of seeing Wolf again excites me. That doesn’t mean I’m wrong.

Cooper : Honestly, Amelia… it might.

Samantha : I want to learn everything about everything. I want to eat it all up. I want to discover myself.

Theodore : Yes, I want that for you too. How can I help?

Samantha : You already have. You helped me discover my ability to want.

movies
Dangal is an amazing movie about gender equality.

Mahavir Singh Phogat : You have to fight in a way that people will remember you. If you win silver, sooner or later, you will be forgotten. If you win gold, you will be an example, And examples are given, child… not forgotten. See those girls? If you win tomorrow, you will not win alone. Millions of girls like them will win along with you. It will be a victory for every girl who is considered inferior to boys; who is forced into household chores, who is married off to just raise children. Tomorrow’s match is the most important one. Because tomorrow, we are not fighting just that Australian, but all those people who think lesser of girls.

movies
A scene from Before Sunrise

“I believe if there’s any kind of God it wouldn’t be in any of us, not you or me but just this little space in between. If there’s any kind of magic in this world it must be in the attempt of understanding someone sharing something. I know, it’s almost impossible to succeed but who cares really? The answer must be in the attempt.”

movies
A scene from Blade Runner

Batty: I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time… like tears in rain… Time to die.

Deckard: [narrating] I don’t know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life – anybody’s life; my life. All he’d wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

Movie poster of Contact

“You’re an interesting species. An interesting mix. You’re capable of such beautiful dreams, and such horrible nightmares. You feel so lost, so cut off, so alone, only you’re not. See, in all our searching, the only thing we’ve found that makes the emptiness bearable, is each other.”

A scene from Freedom Writers

Maybe we should talk about art. Tito’s got real talent, don’t you think? You know something? I saw a picture just like this once, in a museum. Only it wasn’t a black man, it was a jewish man. And instead of the big lips he had a really big nose, like a rat’s nose. But he wasn’t just one particular jewish man. This was a drawing of all jews. And these drawings were put in the newspapers by the most famous gang in history.

You think you know all about gangs? You’re amateurs. This gang will put you all to shame. And they started out poor and angry and everybody looked down on them. Until one man decided to give them some pride, an identity… and somebody to blame.

You take over neighborhoods? That’s nothing compared to them. They took over countries. You want to know how? They just wiped out everybody else. Yeah, they wiped out everybody they didn’t like and everybody they blamed for their life being hard. And one of the ways they did it was by doing this: see, they print pictures like this in the newspapers, jewish people with big, long noses… blacks with big, fat lips.

They’d also published scientific evidence that proved that jews and blacks were the lowest form of human species. Jews and blacks were more like animals. And because they were just like animals it didn’t matter if they lived or died. In fact, life would be a whole lot better if they were all dead. That’s how a holocaust happens. And that’s what you all think of each other.

A scene from Mr Nobody

Nemo Nobody : Every path is the right path. Everything could’ve been anything else. And it would have just as much meaning.

“I want it over and done. I do. I’m tired, boss. Tired of bein’ on the road, lonely as a sparrow in the rain. Tired of not ever having me a buddy to be with, or tell me where we’s coming from or going to, or why. Mostly I’m tired of people being ugly to each other. I’m tired of all the pain I feel and hear in the world everyday. There’s too much of it. It’s like pieces of glass in my head all the time. Can you understand?”

movies
A scene from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

“To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, to draw closer, to find each other and to feel. That is the purpose of life.”

“Nobody is gonna hit as hard as life, but it ain’t how hard you can hit. It’s how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. It’s how much you can take, and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done.”

movies
A scene from Life of Pi

Adult Pi Patel: [voiceover, scene shows Mexican beach] I was so spent, I could hardly move. And so, Richard Parker went ahead of me. He stretched his legs, and walked along the shore. At the edge of the jungle, he stopped. I was certain he was going to look back at me, flatten his ears to his head, growl. That he would bring our relationship to an end in some way. But he just stared ahead into the jungle.

Adult Pi Patel: [in present, to Writer] And then Richard Parker, my fierce companion, the terrible one who kept me alive, disappeared forever from my life.

Adult Pi Patel: [voiceover, beach scene again] After a few hours, a member of my own species found me. He left and returned with a group who carried me away. I wept like a child. Not because I was overwhelmed at having survived, although I was. I was weeping because Richard Parker left me *so* unceremoniously. It broke my heart.

Adult Pi Patel: [in present again, to Writer] You know, my father was right. Richard Parker never saw me as his friend. After all we had been through, he didn’t even look back. But I have to believe there was more in his eyes than my own reflection staring back at me. I know it, I felt it, even if I can’t prove it. You know, I’ve left so much behind: my family, the zoo, India, Anandi. I suppose in the end, the whole of life becomes an act of letting go. But what always hurts the most is not taking a moment to say goodbye.

I was never able to thank my father for all I learned from him. To tell him, without his lessons, I would never have survived. I know Richard Parker is a tiger but I wish I had said, “It’s over. We survived. Thank you for saving my life. I love you, Richard Parker. You’ll always be with me. May God be with you.
