Gianni (w)Infantino

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association, better known as just FIFA, changed a lot since being founded in 1904. Now it has a new president who has to clean the corruption mess created during Sepp Blatter dominion (1998-2016).

Each from 209 national associations had one vote. Rules were similar to normal presidential votings. Two rounds. First with all candidates. You receive more than half the votes, you win. Gianni Infantino polled 88 votes and the second round was necessary. Then only with two contestants. Swiss received 27 votes more than his Bahrain rival Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa and the new FIFA story started.

Infantino is a 45-year-old lawyer from Brig in the Valais region of Switzerland, less than six miles from the last president Blatter’s hometown of Visp. He came to UEFA in August 2000, working on a range of legal, commercial and professional football matters, and was appointed Director of UEFA’s Legal Affairs and Club Licensing Division in January 2004.

Football fans know him from FIFA competition draws where he was presiding for years. Infantino has now become the 9th president in FIFA history. He is likely to do it for many years, the same as his predecessors (remember, in 112 years FIFA has had only eight leaders). His main goal will be about making the football world upright and clear once again. Last problems caused the loss of respect amongst fans and as a result of that, the loss of sponsors.

“FIFA has gone through sad times, moments of crisis. But those times are over. We need to implement the reforms, we need to have good governance and transparency. But we also need to have respect. We will regain this respect by hard work and dedication, so we can again concentrate on the wonderful game of football” that’s what he said and we, the football supporters, have to trust in it.

Have a good weekend man, see you Monday!
